In memory of Chef Daniel Hoglander

Chef Daniel Hoglander in 2023

It is with deep sadness I learned of the passing of Daniel Hoglander, founding chef of Aloe in Stockholm, who left behind his partner and six children at the age 45.

I only got to dine at Aloe once, and was graced with a front-row seat to Daniel's brilliance.

It's a meal I've often thought about over the past 18 months, and I couldn't wait to return this summer. Aloe is magical in its approach, and it's clear Daniel is a part of its DNA.

I fondly remember our brief interaction, and could not help but think during the meal that Aloe was pushing for 3*.

A lighthearted moment came when a diner stood up and shouted to the restaurant her love for her partner and toasted him (or so I'm told because it was Swedish). A hush befell the room before erupting in awkward laughter and a cheer. I made some silly offhand remark and asked what I just witnessed. Daniel just sort of shrugged his shoulders and and offered a wry smile.

The community has lost a a gifted talent. My condolences to Daniel's family and the family at Aloe, who I hope will be able to continue Daniel's work, commitment and vision in due course.
