I was dining in Japan recently and interacted with a chef who does not speak English. He also handled the wine and when I asked for pairings with the tasting menu, with the help of Google translate, he understood.
Unfortunately, when I was presented the bill, the wine charge was more than twice the cost of the food. I have no idea, based on what I was served, if this charge was appropriate and a value or vastly over priced.
As a guest, never assume anything and as a restaurant, be up front with your guests.
Was this my fault? 100%.
My new policy going forward? Always ask for pricing when something is unclear or not stated. I should be making informed decisions, not assumptions.
